Frequently Asked Questions:

What do I need to begin?

If you are using insurance, you will need an order or referral from your doctor to begin. Your evaluation will need to be scheduled within 90 days of the date on that prescription. You will also need your identification and insurance information. Families should be prepared to share pediatrician information as we send our reports to the pediatrician.

Phoenix Therapies+ will email you several forms prior to your evaluation in order to obtain your medical history. In addition, there will be office forms such as our privacy policy and informed consent forms.

What happens on the first day?

The first appointment usually takes about 60-90 minutes, and includes the completion of your registration paperwork and initial interview. We will confirm receipt of the forms emailed. Typically, at the end of the evaluation, we can share preliminary results with you and propose a plan. Payment for services will be charged by credit card the day of your child’s or your appointment per our policy. We will finalize the report later that day and contact you if there are any changes. This report will be sent to your referring provider. We will then schedule treatment/coaching sessions.

What happens during the treatment sessions?

Treatment sessions will vary depending on what we are working on and what your goals are. Each session is personalized, and we try to incorporate your hobbies and interests so the activities will be both motivating and fun while you are being challenged! Treatment sessions can vary in time from 30 minutes to 60 minutes, depending on what we are working on and how you are progressing. We prefer to use current schoolwork and/or job responsibilities or activities at home you want to resume so that there is carry-over from therapy to your day to day. You may expect some pediatric treatment sessions, especially for children under 3, to follow a play-based approach where activities or toys are chosen based on the child's interests, to work on speech, language, and occupational goals in a naturalistic way.

How do I know I’m improving?

Good question! We will complete a re-evaluation where we repeat what we initially tested, to compare results. In addition, we will be tracking progress with each therapy session. Depending on the results and your goals, this will help guide us for further treatment versus discharge or graduation from speech or occupational therapy services.

How often do you typically see people?

This will depend on your needs, schedule and goals. On average, we typically see clients 1-2x per week for 12 weeks, pending progress. With most swallowing clients, the frequency is closer to 3x per week for 6-8 weeks. If you are an LSVT LOUD client, the program already has an established protocol of 4x per week for 4 weeks.

Executive Function Coaching or ADHD Coaching and post concussive care can begin at 2x per week and gradually reduce to 1x per week, and then 1x per month.

Will I have homework?

Yes - absolutely. In order to make any kind of change, the mind and body need reinforcement and practice. So please be aware you will have home practice to help reinforce what we have worked on together.

Have other questions?

Please provide any other questions in the message area of the Contact page of this website. We’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have!

Amy and her team do an amazing job helping our residents. She is obviously very dedicated to her work and gives us great suggestions and ideas to keep our residents safe with their swallowing and gives us helpful ideas to help improve their communication and cognition. Phoenix Therapies+ worked weekly with my 5 year old son on his areas of disfluency. We saw a major improvement after just one session! They gave me strategies and coached me in ways to discuss my son's speech struggles in a positive way. My son looked forward to his weekly sessions and really enjoyed the activities they had planned. All the activities were tailored to his interests and very motivating. Working with a 5 year old virtually is no small task and I was really impressed!

Amy is just the sweetest person ever, I’ve been to many therapists before, and most have not been as nice, compassionate and understanding as her. Her whole team actively listens to what I'm saying and works with me and my personality to find a method of improvement that works specifically for me. Amy, in particular, doesn’t treat me like I'm broken, disabled, less than or just another patient, she treats me like a fellow human being that needs some help and direction. She focuses on strengths to help overcome weaknesses and that's a great way to go about it! Absolutely lovely experience!

I am a man in my mid 40's who has dealt with a lateral lisp my whole life. It does not impair the ability for others to understand me, thus my parents did not believe I needed speech therapy. As I got older no therapist wanted to work with me in this area. This lisp has bothered me my whole life, being teased throughout school and sometime even by colleagues, and even more so as my job involved more and more public speaking. The more I listened to myself in recordings the more I noticed how bad it sounded to me. My son had the same lateral lisp and he was able to fix it but his speech therapists only worked with children. I finally was given information about Phoenix Therapies+ and they agreed to help me this past year. After several months my speech improved and my lisp is essentially gone (with a few exceptions here and there). I continue to work at it and it is becoming a more natural way for me to speak. I cannot thank Phoenix Speech Therapy enough for helping me rid of something that has plagued me for four decades! Amy, thank you so very much!

I would absolutely recommend Phoenix Therapies+. I saw Amy for myself about 8 years ago and was happy to see she opened her own business when my daughter was in need.
