The Tools For Success

Navigating IEP’s and 504 Plans for Children & Teens:

The process of understanding an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or a 504 Plan due to your child’s special needs can be overwhelming and the documents themselves can be intimidating. Let us help you understand special education: how to navigate meetings, what services are available, and common abbreviations, acronyms and terminology. Our goal is to give you more confidence and the tools for success.

Here are some terminology explanations to get you started:

what is an iep plan?

An IEP is an Individualized Education Program. This is a legal document created by a team of parents, teachers, support staff, and others who outlines a plan for a child that qualifies for special education services.

what is a 504 plan?

Children with disabilities who do not qualify for special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) may receive supports, services, and accommodations under Section 504.

For instance, a parent of a child with a disability who doesn’t qualify for special education but still needs assistance, may be advised to look into “a 504 plan” for their child.
