What do I need to begin?

You will need your doctor’s prescription ordering Speech Therapy services. Your evaluation will need to be scheduled within 90 days of the date on the script. You will also need identification and your insurance information. Your insurance will be contacted prior to evaluation to check for eligibility and verification of services covered. Forms asking about your medical history will be mailed to you to complete prior to your evaluation.


What happens on the first day?

The first appointment usually takes about 60-90 minutes, and includes the completion of your registration paperwork and initial interview. We will discuss the treatment forms, including the notice of the privacy policy/HIPPA acknowledgement, informed consent to treat, emergency contacts, medical release of records, insurance information, and plan of care. If your insurance has a co-pay, this will be due by cash or check before we begin the evaluation. Once we have completed all of the necessary initial forms, the evaluation will begin. Typically, at the end of the evaluation, I can share your results with you results and a propose a plan. I will finalize the report later that day and contact you if there are any changes. This report will be sent to your referring provider. We will then set up treatment sessions/appointments. If your insurance requires authorization before treatment begins, we will need to wait for authorization from the insurance company before we start treatment. Insurance turn-around time can vary, and can take up to 2 weeks.


What happens during the treatment sessions?

Treatment sessions will vary depending on what we are working on and what your goals are. Each session is personalized so activities and tasks to reach your goals will be different. I try to incorporate your hobbies and interests so it will be both motivating and fun while you are being challenged! Treatment sessions can vary in time as well from 30 minutes to 60 minutes, depending on what we are working on and how you are progressing.

How do I know I’m improving?

Good question! After a month, I will complete a re-evaluation where I repeat what I initially tested you to compare results. In addition, I will be tracking your progress with each therapy session. Depending on your results and your goals will help guide us for further treatment versus discharge from speech therapy services.

How often do you typically see people?

This will depend on your needs, schedule and goals. On average, I typically see people 2x/week for 4-6 weeks. With most swallowing clients, the frequency is closer to 3x/week for 6-8 weeks. If you are an LSVT LOUD client, the program has already been established at 4x/week for 4 weeks per their protocol.


How should I prepare for my visits at home?

All we need is your willingness to work together and a table and chairs! I’ll provide the rest.


Will I have homework?

Yes - absolutely. In order for you to make any kind of change, the mind and body both need reinforcement and practice. So please be aware you will have homework to help reinforce what we have worked on together.
